KHSU has secured initial funding and has a strong business plan that will support its continued operation. To achieve its vision and maximize its impact on health care in Kansas, it will require gifts targeted to the following priority areas:
Student Scholarships and Fellowships
Student debt weighs heavily on medical students and affects their decisions about practice areas. As a nonprofit, KHSU – KansasCOM seeks to solve the community problem of inadequate access to health care. Some students may come from families able to finance their educations and others will access student loans to finance their educational costs. Many students will come from families that will need to assume a high level of student-loan debt to complete their educations. That high debt could work against our goal of producing practitioners who will serve rural communities with family-centered care.
Further, lack of competitive scholarships can have a ripple effect on the overall success of the program, beginning with the students we enroll, their test scores, and our ability to attract a diverse student body. Support for scholarships and fellowships is essential to achieving our goal of addressing the healthcare crisis in the state and ensuring our commitment to diversity.
Innovation Funds
The early years of KHSU – KansasCOM will require the ability to seize new opportunities as they arise and remain agile in building a young college. Innovation Funds will provide working capital available to the President, the Dean, or Department Chairs, to be used in areas of greatest need or opportunity. Such funds enable donors to provide support at the institutional level or focus their support on specific specialties of greatest interest to them.
Among the options for donor support: President’s Innovation Fund, Research Program Seed Fund, Endowed Professorships and Chairs, and Faculty Development Funds.
Technology and Program Support
The use of engaging learning styles and state-of-the-art technology is central to the vision for KHSU – KansasCOM. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), along with other types of technology will be used to enhance student learning and outcomes. Donors may make gifts designated to obtain specific equipment, software or systems. Donors’ generosity may be directed to support a variety of crucial priorities at a wide variety of gift levels, including but not limited to:
- Establish a research center
- Create a simulation lab with high fidelity mannequins and ultrasound task trainers
- Build clinical examination rooms with virtual standardized patients
- Design anatomy lab featuring virtual reality and gamification
- Develop Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) lab
- Graduate Medical Education (GME) residency development
- Fund library subscriptions and other resources
Flexible Support Where the Opportunity is Greatest
Insightful donors may make gifts that are not designated to any specific use and thus are available to support overall operation of the school. Unrestricted gifts at all levels will accelerate KHSU – KansasCOM’s growth and impact, especially in its early years.
KHSU encourages donors to visit with their family, and financial and legal advisors, about strategies for making charitable gifts.
