WICHITA, Kansas — The proposed Kansas Health Science Center – Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KHSC-KansasCOM), currently under construction in downtown Wichita, recently appointed four additions to its faculty: John McMaster, MD, as physician faculty – emergency medicine; Michael Morrow, DO, as associate professor, radiology, clinical faculty; Joaquin Santos, MD, as physician faculty – internal medicine; and Ava Stanczak, DO, as chair for primary care and professor of pediatrics.

John McMaster, MD, has been appointed physician faculty in emergency medicine at the proposed KHSC-KansasCOM. He was most recently a physician and partner at Vituity Healthcare and worked for 30 years as a physician in emergency medicine at Via Christi Regional Medical Center. His background also includes serving as corporate medical director at Hawker Beechcraft Aircraft Corporation and director of emergency medicine education at Wesley Medical Center. Since 2012, he has been the medical director for the State of Kansas Board of Healing Arts and chairman of the EMS Physicians Advisory Committee for the Medical Society of Sedgwick County.

Serving as associate professor of radiology and clinical faculty, Michael Morrow, DO, completed diagnostic radiology residency and breast imaging fellowship training in Massachusetts. Three years ago, he moved to Wichita and joined Kansas Imaging Consultants. After graduating from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, he served in the United States Navy as base flight surgeon at the Naval Hospital Signonella in Italy for three years and was then senior regional flight surgeon and Navy senior medical officer at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma for five years.

Joaquin Santos, MD, joins the staff as physician faculty in internal medicine. Before retiring in 2014, Dr. Santos was a physician in Wichita at Preferred Medical Associates, Wichita Clinic, Via Christi, and for Wichita State University Athletics. He was also medical staff officer at Crow-Tretbar Medical Associates, Wesley Medical Center, and the Sedgwick County Medical Society. He has been a medical staff member of the College World Series since 1988 and continues to serve on a variety of boards.

As chair for primary care and professor of pediatrics, Ava Stanczak, DO, brings 35 years of experience teaching pediatric medicine to medical students. She has worked in private practice as a pediatrician since 1986 focusing on traditionally underserved populations. She has long committed to sharing her knowledge to future physicians having previously served as the chair of pediatrics at University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then served as the assistant dean at DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Stanczak serves on a number of boards and committees, including the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners where she is chair of pediatric and adolescent medicine.

With the goal of opening for the 2022 academic year, the proposed KHSC-KansasCOM is working through the accreditation process. The campus is currently under construction to transform 116,000 square feet of the iconic building at 217 N. Douglas Ave. in the heart of downtown Wichita. Nearing completion, the campus features clean inspirational design, innovative state-of-the-art technology and learning spaces, an osteopathic skills training center, standardized patient teaching rooms, large lecture halls, small group study rooms, a virtual anatomy lab, and much more.
